St.Christopher House

March 14th, 2011

After Danny, the instructor for the course, noticed that Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre is no longer available for our project, he assigned me to new community partner, the St.Christopher House.

Here are some information about the organization and the program that I will be contributing:

Organization / Office:
St. Christopher House, Bang the Drum, Computer and Internet Access

Brief Description of Your Organization:
St. Christopher House is a neighbourhood centre in the downtown west end of Toronto, founded in 1912. We work with diverse individuals, families and groups to promote personal and social change in order to achieve a safe, healthy and accepting society for all.

St. Christopher House is a secular organization and is strongly committed to community development in all aspects of our work.

The Bang the Drum Program provides free internet access and computer tutoring in a variety of subjects.

Brief Description of the Service Learning Opportunity:
The project would be flexible depending on the students’ needs and goals. Some suggestions would be:
  • Set up a Moodle server
  • Tutor a small computer group
  • Research and Develop online learning materials for a diverse population
The hours could be flexible – day, evening or Saturday.

Location of student work (independent or on –site):
The work would be onsite. For the most part it would be at either 248 Ossington Ave. (at Dundas) or 1033 King St. W. (at Shaw)

Other Information:
The Bang the Drum program works with a diverse group of adults, many of whom fall on the wrong side of the digital divide (either because they do not have the skills to participate in the online community or because of lack of access to technology).
